赤門と呼ばれる、朱塗りの山門で有名な寺。石田三成の居城・佐和山城の大手門を移築したものと伝わる。本尊阿弥陀如来は淀殿の念持仏で、大坂城より持ち出されたといわれる。書院の地蔵尊と千体仏は石田三成の念持仏とされ、紅白の砂利を火と水にみなした「彼岸白道の庭」の奥には権現位牌堂があり、徳川家康の位牌を安置する。江戸時代は朝鮮通信使の宿館でもあった。

昭和12年(1937)に近江商人古川鉄治郎氏の寄贈、建築家ウィリアム・メレル・ヴォーリズ氏の設計で建てられた小学校。当時は「東洋一の小学校」「白亜の教育殿堂」といわれ、平成25年(2013)には国の登録有形文化財に指定。アニメの聖地・映画のロケ地としても愛され、多くの人が訪れている。
