松平家の四代・親忠が子孫繁栄などを祈願するため祀った。家康も氏神として幼い頃より崇敬し、大きな合戦のたびに戦勝祈願に訪れている。現社殿は家康造営の本殿を、家光が増築して権現造り[ごんげんづくり]に改築した珍しい合作。極彩色の社殿群はいずれも国の重要文化財。

鳥川で発生するゲンジボタルは1000匹を超える年もあり、その幻想的で美しい光の舞は見事の一言。旧小学校の校舎を改修整備した「岡崎市ホタル学校」では、ゲンジボタルの幼虫飼育を行っており、ホタルの生態や生息環境について学ぶことができる。鳥川地区には「平成の名水百選」に選ばれた湧水群があり、山歩きコースが整備されている。また、ゲンジボタルの生息環境の保全活動が、地域のホタル保存会により行われている。

渥美半島は電照菊の国内シェア約3割を占める、全国屈指の生産地。9～11月ごろの22時以降になると、開花時期を遅らせるため、ハウスに光を灯し人工的に日照時間を長くしている。ハウスの灯りが秋の夜空を優艶に照らす。
