Trick Art Museum Karuizawa

Manping Street

Former Karuizawa Ginza Street (formerly Karuizawa Ginza Street)

It is also the former Nakasendo, where many travelers came and went during the Edo period. At the Karuizawa Tourist Hall in the center of the street, they provide tourist information such as providing information about Karuizawa and introducing accommodation facilities.

Former Usui Pass

It is a spot of John's favorite who loved nature, and one of the places he often visited with his family. It is located on the prefectural border between Nagano and Gunma prefectures, with majestic views such as Mount Asama and Mount Yagatake.

Takero Arishima

Taishō 12 (1923) A stone monument built on the site of Jogetsuan, the villa of the novelist Takuro Arishima, who had completed his mind with a female reporter, Akiko Hatano. There is also a monument of the Childe Friendship, which is engraved in English with a passage from a letter that Takero sent to Childa, a girl he knew in Switzerland. In addition, there are monuments related to literary scholars who visited Karuizawa, such as the Murou Saisei literary monument standing on the banks of the Yagasaki River, the Masamune Swan [Masamune Hakucho] literary monument, and the Basho phrase monument. Literary monuments are one of the charms of Karuizawa.

Japan Episcopal Church Karuizawa Show Memorial Chapel

The oldest church in Karuizawa, where the Canadian missionary A. C. Shaw, said to be the father of Karuizawa Development, spent the first summer of Meiji 19 (1886) and served as a base for missionary work. A bust of Shaw and a memorial stand in the quiet church garden. The Karuizawa villa No. 1 he built is now restored to the back of the church. You can visit the show house memorial hall (fee: free; time: 9-17; day off: Thursday; 11-March; question: Karuizawa Town Board of Education).

Kumano Imperial Shrine

A unique shrine located at the top of the Usui Pass, with the main shrine on the prefectural border. For this reason, it has a different name in Nagano from Kumano Kōdai Shrine and in Gunma, Kumano Shrine, and is also separate from prayer, amulet, worship and office. In addition to the Shinanoki of the sacred tree, which is 1000 years old, there is also the oldest komainu in the prefecture, which is said to have been built in the middle of the Muromachi period.

Karuizawa St. Paul Catholic Church

American architect Antonin Raymond designed in the image of a church in rural Europe. The triangular roof and large spire have become a symbol of Karuizawa. It is also famous as a church that appeared in Tatsuo Hori's novel The Cross of the Tree. The statue of Maria, which is set in the roof, and the glowing cross at its top are impressive. Although there are conditions, we accept a wedding, and in the bridal season we may meet a couple heading for a wedding.

Gozen Water

On the grounds of the hotel, "Gozensui", which serves as the source of the source of Unba Pond, springs up, and envelops the surrounding area in a chillingly pleasant cool air. Known as Meisui since the Edo period, this spring water was used in ancient times for the gozen of the daimyō and the Miyaya, and was also served when the Meiji Emperor took lunch. There is a small diameter surrounded by trees, and if you walk around the waterside where watercress and moss grow, you will be healed by negative ions and babbling sounds.

Yunba Pond

An artificial pond made by damming the river. He had previously been nicknamed "Swan Lake" by foreigners who had visited Karuizawa, due to the visit of a white swan in winter. Around the pond, there is a promenade of about 25 minutes around the forest, such as maple trees, and it is a great walking course where you can observe the water plants and water birds in May and in July-September. Fall foliage from around mid-October is also wonderful.
