Amako Soubei\u2019s work Rakudai Ninja Rantar\u014d is a gag manga full of lively and humorous slapstick scenes performed by the \u201cNintama,\u201d young ninja trainees at the Ninja Academy, together with many other unique and charming characters. For Amako Soubei, who had loved making people laugh since childhood, manga was \u201ca means of conveying something amusing.\u201d In fact, long before Rakudai Ninja Rantar\u014d was created, he had been drawing gag manga and submitting them to magazines, consistently pursuing the ideal of \u201cbeing funny no matter how many times you see it,\u201d much like classical rakugo or Sh\u014dchiku Shinkigeki. From 2004 to 2007, in the 10-volume series Rakugo Nagaya (text by Kazuaki Okamoto, Poplar Publishing), he illustrated works that concisely summarized well-known classical rakugo stories by theme, enriching their world with his expressive artwork. Amako Soubei, who valued historical accuracy, also carefully researched Edo-period customs\u2014which differ from the Muromachi period in which Rantar\u014d and his friends live\u2014and incorporated them thoughtfully into his illustrations.
This exhibition presents the world of classical rakugo featured in Rakugo Nagaya through its original illustration artwork. It also highlights Rakudai Ninja Rantar\u014d as a gag manga, showcasing original drawings filled with the essence of humor\u2014character charm, witty lines, and playful wordplay.
