The Guardian Deity of Tsuwano, Adorned with 1,000 Striking Vermilion Torii Gates
From the town of Tsuwano, if you look toward Shiroyama (Castle Hill), you'll see a path lined with brilliant vermilion torii gates stretching up the mountain. At the top of this 300-meter path, through a tunnel of approximately 1,000 torii gates, stands the majestic Taikodani Inari Shrine.
Founded in 1773 (An'ei 2) by Kamei Norisada, the 7th lord of the Tsuwano Domain, the shrine was established to protect the castle and bring peace to the people, enshrining a deity from Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto in the valley known as Taikodani.
The number of annual visitors ranks second among all shrines in Shimane Prefecture, following only Izumo Oyashiro Shrine.
It ranks second only to Izumo Taisha in the prefecture's shrine for annual worshipers.
