What kind of place is "Miyagiken Matsushima Rikyu"?

It is a short walk from JR Matsushima Kaigan Station and is located along Matsushima Bay, "Miyagiken Matsushima Rikyu".

This is the site of the "Marin Pier Matsushima Suizokukan", which was loved by locals for many years and closed their 88 years of history in 2015. As a local writer, it is also a place of memories that I often visited when I was a little.

It has been transformed into a commercial facility where you can enjoy a view of the elegant Japanese garden and Matsushima Bay, while the remains of the aquarium, including its circular exterior.

First of all, I will introduce the "Rikyu Teien" which is the number one highlight of the facility.

The garden, which represents Matsushima Bay, is planted with Someiyoshino, Yabutsubaki and Iromomiji, so you can feel the nature of the four seasons.

You can walk around the park, and there is also a happy pool where children can play in the water in the summer.

This "Letsuru Tower", which is also a symbol, is also a hot topic as an SNS spot, and "Sakasa Retsuru" reflected in the pond is also a must-see♪

Light-ups are carried out depending on the season, such as autumn foliage and winter illumination event "Matsushima Harbor Light".

In addition, on the rooftop observation terrace, you can meet the exquisite view of Matsushima Bay.

On the second floor of the facility is the "Miyagiken Matsushima Rikyu Hakubutsukan", which presents the composition of Matsushima Bay and the Tōhoku region, as well as the island nation of Japan.

A full-scale model of an ichthyosaur, a Utatsusaurus, with a total length of about 3m, is visible immediately after entering. It is said to have lived more than 200 million years ago, and it is said that the first fossil was found on the coast of Tatazaki, Utatsu-cho (now Minamisanriku-cho) in Miyagi Prefecture.

The museum here is supervised by Dr. Reishi Takashima, from the Center for Academic Resources Research and Publication of Tohoku University and a comprehensive academic museum of Tohoku University, where you can systematically learn the untold story of the birth of one of the world's best beauty of many islands, "Matsushima Bay".

"Blue Impulse Flight Simulator" uses a dedicated controller to steer Blue Impulse in a game-like way. You can view Miyagi Prefecture and Matsushima Bay from above, and learn topography and positional relationships in a fun way.

The popular Blue Impulse, which was also active in the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, makes you feel like traveling around Miyagi, so I want you to experience it by all means♪

[Shopping] Tohoku specialty and food souvenirs

The free-to-enter area includes a souvenir shop and two shops that collect specialty products from Tohoku.

This time I came to "Hinomoto Hanpu Matsushima Rikyu-ten", which has a main store in Yamagata Prefecture. It is a popular shop with a selection of highly designed canvas items with a focus on functionality and durability.

The tote bag is a collaboration item with the leather brand "kissora". It is a small B5 size daily tote that fits not only casual but also beautiful coordinates.

There is a front pocket and an inner pocket, and the storage is perfect. The cowhide handle and the canvas in a muted shade are attractive, and they are popular with women.

San-ren Pasu is an all-purpose case that can be used to store a variety of items, such as coins, accessories, business cards, cosmetics, and car keys. It seems to be an item that has a lot of patronage to Hinomoto Hanpu staff.
