The Okhotsk Line

The Garinko, with its bright red body and two special screws, was originally built as an icebreaker for oil field development in Alaska. It was registered as a Hokkaido Heritage in 2004. The ship's interior is equipped with heating. The cruise that pushes through the ice floes, which blanket the Okhotsk coast in white (from January to March), is popular, as well as summer cruises for whale and dolphin research, fireworks, and stargazing.

A science museum themed around drift ice. Inside, there is a permanent exhibition room where visitors can learn about drift ice in a fun way, a dome theater that screens stunning images of the majestic nature of Okhotsk on a 360° screen, and a playland where children can learn about drift ice and natural phenomena through play. In the "Severe Cold Experience Room," visitors can experience temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees even in midsummer, including an "ice bubble experience." The cryo tank, where over 100 sea angels can be observed at all times, is also popular. It serves as the main facility of the "Roadside Station Okhotsk Monbetsu," which also features a souvenir shop. The surrounding area is filled with attractions such as the Okhotsk Tower, an artificial beach, and a drift ice observation room.

"Tokari" means seal in the Ainu language, and here we are treating injured seals and rehabilitating them to return to the sea. There are four large outdoor ponds and 10 indoor ponds, and you can take a closer look at the ecology of about 20 seals, including the Gopma seal and the ringed seal. Observing seals swimming in the water through a glass, or seeing seals in close proximity at Aizarashi Square, you can have an unforgettable experience (time of feeding: 10:30, 11:30, 13:30, 14:30, 15).
