Nagasaki Sundries

A warship island refers to a short island floating off the coast of Nagasaki Bay. It once flourished as an undersea coal mine island, but became a ruin along with the Hamashima Coal Mine Closed Mountain, and it came to be called Warship Island because of its resemblance to the battleship "Tosa". The high-rise apartment building of the residents, which was set up in 1916, and the building of the No. 31 miner's house remain. Currently you can only land with guided tour participation. It is also one of the constituent assets of the World Heritage Site "Industrial Revolutionary Heritage of Meiji Japan".

After the opening of the country, amid rising demand for coal, Saga Domain and Thomas Graber (Glover Shokai) opened it as the first Western-style pit in Japan from 1868, and the coal was deposited the following year, and full-scale coal mining began.

The site of a coal mine located on a floating island about 15km off the port of Nagasaki. In Takashima, coal mining had been carried out since the early 19th century by Saga Domain, but the joint management of the Takashima Coal Mine Development began as a joint venture with Glover Shokai. In April 1869, the first steam engine to be introduced in Japan (Hokkei Well) was opened. The Hokkei Well Mine operated until 1876, and became the pioneer of modern coal mines in Japan. Other coal mines were developed in Takashima, and after management moved to Mitsubishi, he became known as "Coal Mine Island" along with Ioshima and others until the mountain closed in 1986. The Beigei Mine site is part of the constituent assets of the World Heritage Site "Industrial Revolutionary Heritage of Meiji Japan". The remains of the Glover House remain around.
