Amako Soubei’s work Rakudai Ninja Rantarō is a gag manga full of lively and humorous slapstick scenes performed by the “Nintama,” young ninja trainees at the Ninja Academy, together with many other unique and charming characters. For Amako Soubei, who had loved making people laugh since childhood, manga was “a means of conveying something amusing.” In fact, long before Rakudai Ninja Rantarō was created, he had been drawing gag manga and submitting them to magazines, consistently pursuing the ideal of “being funny no matter how many times you see it,” much like classical rakugo or Shōchiku Shinkigeki. From 2004 to 2007, in the 10-volume series Rakugo Nagaya (text by Kazuaki Okamoto, Poplar Publishing), he illustrated works that concisely summarized well-known classical rakugo stories by theme, enriching their world with his expressive artwork. Amako Soubei, who valued historical accuracy, also carefully researched Edo-period customs—which differ from the Muromachi period in which Rantarō and his friends live—and incorporated them thoughtfully into his illustrations.
This exhibition presents the world of classical rakugo featured in Rakugo Nagaya through its original illustration artwork. It also highlights Rakudai Ninja Rantarō as a gag manga, showcasing original drawings filled with the essence of humor—character charm, witty lines, and playful wordplay. Discover the source of Amako Soubei’s unique gag sensibility, where each page turn brings a gentle laugh. We hope you enjoy this delightful charm.
