Experience Programs | Tojinbo・Oshima・Mikuni Port Area

Gazing out at Oshima, the sacred island of the gods, stitch by stitch, each one filled with meaning.
In the Anto district of Mikuni-cho, Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture, a traditional ama (female diver) prayer stitching technique called “Mokko Sashi” had disappeared for nearly 70 years.
In this workshop, you will create a “semamori” using one of its most representative patterns, “mon-zashi.”
A semamori is a protective embroidery that was once stitched onto the backs of children’s kimono in Japan, expressing wishes for healthy growth and protection from harm coming from behind.
Your finished semamori will be made into an appliqué that you can sew onto your own shirt or other garment.
Please bring one of your own shirts on the day.
A local instructor—who deciphered and revived Anto Mokko Sashi after 70 years—will guide you in person, sharing stories about the history of the Kitamaebune trading ships, daily life in Anto, and the meanings behind Mokko Sashi.
From the large windows of the workshop venue, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Oshima, the sacred island.
