In the caldera Aso, one of the largest in the world, you can see the activity of active volcanoes in close proximity at the first crater of Nakadake, one of the five Mt. It is a rare tourist spot in the world and has been recognized as a UNESCO World Geopark. The prefectural capital, Kumamoto, is dotted with attractions such as the Kumamoto Castle built by Kiyomasa Kato and the Suizenji Seishuen. Castle town Uto is the gateway of Amakusa. There is Shimoshima, which has become a battleground for the Shimahara Rebellion, and there are many historical sites related to Kirishitan.
