高さ120ｍの牛久大仏はニューヨークにある自由の女神の約3倍、長さ18ｍの掌には奈良の大仏さまをのせられるほど。びっくりするほど大きいのにまったく威圧感がないばかりか、やさしく穏やかな気持ちが湧いてきます。そんな牛久大仏の魅力のヒミツに迫ってみました。

足元に広がる浄土庭園・定聚の苑（じょうじゅのその）。小さな動物たちとの触れ合いも楽しめます。

Approach is powerful

If you enter the main gate and go for a while, you can see the glass-walled Hakkenmon, which enshrines the three statues of the Buddha.

I looked back through the gate and saw the Ushiku Daibutsu on the glass. I was surprised to see the Daibutsu and the Buddha facing each other like this.

As you go straight along the approach, the big buddha is getting bigger and bigger. There is the largest incense burner in Japan on the way, but the big buddha is too huge, and it looks the other way small.

When you reach directly below, this power. You can no longer see the whole picture. The one connected by the left and right palms is the "Raigouin", a sign of the time when Amitabha can come to pick up the sentient from the Juraku Pure Land.

牛久大仏の基本データを予習しましょう！

胎内をお参りする前に、大仏さまの基本データを知っておきましょう。 高さは120ｍですが、基壇と蓮台合わせて20ｍですから、御身丈自体は100ｍ。お顔が20ｍですから、ん、 5頭身?! いやいや9頭身はありそうに見えますよね。ちなみに120ｍは、阿弥陀如来の12の力「十二光」にちなむ数字です。12ｍでも巨大なのにその100倍とは。思い切りがスゴい。では1階から順にお参りしましょう。

1階「光の世界」は光と香りと静寂の世界

入るとそこは真の闇。でも扉が開くといきなり場面転換し、光が演出する空間が広がります。漂うハスの香りもあいまって不思議な浮遊感を感じます。

2階「知恩報徳の世界」は写経の間。牛久大仏のなりたちコーナーも必見です

写経席は約70席あり、予約なしで体験できます。壁に貼られた絵ことばから、心にささるものを見つけて、その席で写経してみましょう。料金は500円〜、受付は閉園時間の1時間前までです。

こちらは大仏の成り立ちコーナー。どのようにできあがったかをパネル展示しています。これはスゴい！　ライブで見てみたかった～。

3階「蓮華蔵世界」は、まばゆい金色に輝く極楽浄土

ここは一般的なお寺では、いわゆる御本堂にあたる場所。荘厳な雰囲気です。壁面を取り巻く約3400体の金色の胎内仏の中には7名までご記帳できる法名帳が納められており、毎日、お経が上げられています。アジア系の方々が参拝をなさっていました。そういえば願生文もタイ語で書かれたものが多かった。インターナショナルに信仰を集めているのですね。

荒天時以外は蓮台部に出ることもできます。地上約30ｍ。ここから仰ぐとドドーン！ さらにさらに大迫力です。

報恩や感謝の気持ちを込めて蓮台に金箔を貼ることもできます（1枚500円）。レアな体験です。

エレベーターで再び地上へ下ったら、周囲の散策を楽しみましょう。鳥や魚が泳ぐ「大心海」、春は桜と芝桜に彩られる「群生海」、季節ごとにさまざまな花が咲き乱れる「花畑」。極楽浄土ってこんな風なのかもという気持ちになってきます。日曜、祝日（12・2月はお休み）には、ヤギ、うさぎ、ケヅメリクガメなどと触れ合える「ふれあい動物園」が開催されます。「お猿のステージ」は金曜を除く毎日行われていますよ（12・2月は日曜、祝日のみ開催）。
