Since around the Tenpo era (1830-1843), the processing and sale of plums, a specialty of the Mikata Five Lakes area, have begun. It is also called Nishida plum from the cultivation area name. The plums have small seeds and thick flesh, with four varieties: Beni-sashi for pickled plums, Fukudayu, Shinheidayu, and Ken-saki for plum wine. Additive-free pickled plums start at 1100 yen for 330g, and plum wine starts at 1210 yen. Many original products are also available.

Mikata Five Lakes are the five lakes that span Mihama-cho and Wakasa-cho, Fukui Prefecture: Mikata Lake, Lake Suigetsu, Lake Kugoko, and Lake Hyuga. It is a group of natural-rich lakes registered in the Ramsar site, and the largest of the five lakes, Suigetsu Lake [Suigetsuko] and the smallest Sugako Lake [Sugako] can be enjoyed from the lake. Set sail with two or more adults, and small dogs can board together. It takes about 40 minutes to and from Seamount [Umiyama] Pier. The recommended seat of a catamaran-style ship with the image of a steamboat is an open deck on the second floor where you can feel the refreshing breeze of the lake. The first floor is air-conditioned.
