Tsuyazaki Kofun group

It is located within the Genkai National Monument. It is well known for its beautiful seashore of white-sand blue pine trees. It is also known for its beautiful setting sun. At low tide from the spring tide to the middle tide, the sandy beach reflects the sky.

Located to the west of the Itoshima Peninsula, this is one of Japan's largest basalt caves (natural monument) and is celebrated in the Hakata Bay song. At an elevation of 64 meters and a length of 180 meters, the cliffs at the cape have been eroded by rough waves, creating a large cave that is 90 meters deep, 2 to 10 meters wide, and 8 meters high from the sea surface. Above the cape, a promenade leads to the Akuyama Oomoto Park. Visitors can explore the cave via a sightseeing boat that operates only from March to December (Phone: 092-328-2012, Fee: 700 yen, Duration: 30 minutes).

Among the nation-designated historical sites, the Tsuyazaki Kofun group has the largest concentration of burial mounds. A total of 41 burial mounds have been built up between the 5th and 6th centuries on a plateau facing the former entry sea, which is now a paddy field. From the observation post on the southern side of the Kofun group, you can see the sea that leads to Oshima and Okinoshima, where the Kofun mounds scattered among the rice fields and the Munakata Taisha Nakatsu-gū are located. As a group of tombs proving the existence of the ancient royal family, the Munakata clan, who nurtured their faith in Okinoshima, it was listed as a World Heritage Site as a constituent asset of the "Kamishuru Ru" Munakata, Okinoshima and the related heritage group.
