Agrikan, the capital of the west

The museum is located within the "Special Historic Site Park Nishitohara Kōmun", the largest ancient mound group in Japan, which is a national designated special historic site and has also been certified as a Japanese Heritage Site. It is built to keep the landscape intact, and the burial mound is explained from various angles, including the terrain and history. Some 300 items are on display, including a full-size model of the Nishitohara No. 4 underground-type side-hole tomb, as well as reproductions of the Kōmojike-shaped Haniwa and the boat-shaped Haniwa, and archaeological materials excavated from Miyazaki Prefecture. Throughout the year, there are many special exhibitions, planned exhibitions and lectures, including international exchange exhibitions with Taiwan and South Korea, and various experiences at the attached ancient life experience hall are also popular.

One of the largest burial mound groups in Japan, recognized as a Japanese heritage site. A total of 319 burial mounds are scattered across a plateau extending 2.6 km east to west and 4.2 km north to south. Among them, the most famous are the Osahozuka, believed to be the tomb of Ninigi no Mikoto, and the Mesahozuka, thought to be the tomb of his wife, Konohanasakuya-hime. Osahozuka is the largest scallop-shaped burial mound in the archipelago, measuring approximately 176 m in length and 18 m in height at the back circular part. Mesahozuka is approximately 176 m long and 15 m high at the back circular part, making it the largest keyhole-shaped mound in Kyushu. Both are off-limits to the public. Iwaya, a circular mound with an outer embankment, remains in a complete form and allows visitors to view the horizontal stone chamber inside. The entire burial mound area has been developed into a park where seasonal flowers such as rapeseed and cosmos can be enjoyed.
