Sakai's big cycads

Private house architecture representing Tanegashima. It was built in 1846 by Gensuke Furuichi, who served the island lord Taneshima, serving as a shōya and others, and has been designated as an important cultural property of the country because it almost retained its original form at the time of construction. In addition, it is a historical walking course around the historical village Sakai Park.

A natural rock formation can be seen along the sea on your left when you travel north for about 9km on Route 58 from Nakasecho Hall. The two megaliths, which line each other next to each other, are Eryong rock on the left (with two corners) towards the sea and Oryong rock on the right. It is said to be the reincarnation rock of a working couple with a good friend who was thrown out into the sea after a stormy night in a cliff. The two rocks are connected by a shimenawa, and are rocks of mystery and faith that are still deeply occupied by the people of the land.

Inujo Coast, located about 3 km southeast of Tanegashima Airport, is one of the most scenic spots on Tanegashima, featuring natural strange rocks, giant boulders, and caves. In the cave at the northern end, there is a legend related to the 10th island lord, Tanegashima Hatatoki. Hatatoki was a practitioner of Shugendo and had been training in this rock cave and the surrounding coastline since he was young. It is said that at one point, he entered the cave and suddenly disappeared, leaving only his beloved horse waiting for his return in front of the cave. The name "Umadachi" is derived from this legend. Entry into the cave is prohibited.
