Yakushima Field Information Center

A public bath located in the Yumuka settlement on Kuchierabu Island, about 12 km west of Yakushima. The bath is filled with a blue-tinged sulfur spring that flows continuously, with hot spring flowers dancing in the air, and separate indoor baths for men and women. Since it is 35 minutes by car from the only port on Kuchierabu Island, Honmura Port, it is advisable to plan ahead and stay at a guesthouse in the settlement.

Emphasizing a spiritual connection with nature, nature guides who are well-versed in Yakushima provide easy-to-understand explanations of the natural mechanisms. Trekking in the primeval forest, such as in the Hiyadani Unsuikyo area, and trekking to Jomon Sugi have become standard offerings. Unique options include spiritual tours that enhance the sense of unity with nature and moonlight bathing camps.

Honbo Shuzo was founded in the early Meiji period, starting with the cotton manufacturing industry. In 1909 (Meiji 42), they began producing shochu, and now they offer a diverse range of products including sweet potato shochu, whiskey, and wine. The Yakushima Denshō Warehouse was established in 1960 (Showa 35) and is a shochu brewery that adheres to traditional handmade clay pot brewing methods. "Mizunomori" is a sweet potato shochu made from the soft water of Yakushima and locally grown sweet potatoes "Shiroyutaka," expressing the nature of Yakushima. Limited to in-island sales, 720ml for 1663 yen. By making a reservation, you can observe the brewing process in the koji room and ancient clay pots for free, and there are also tastings and sales of shochu at the shop.
