旧九州鉄道本社を再整備した記念館。館内には九州を舞台としたパノラマ鉄道模型、電車の運転を疑似体験できる運転シミュレーターなどがあり、屋外には、本物そっくりの運転システムで遊べるミニ鉄道公園、九州各地で活躍した歴代の車両展示の車両展示場がある。

明治22年(1889)に国の特別輸出港に指定、さらに門司を起点とする九州鉄道が開通したことで、港の周辺には海運会社や商社などの近代建築物が次々と建てられた。これらの建築物や港の美しい景観を活かし、観光地として整備したのが門司港エリア。ノスタルジックな洋館のほか、ショップやレストラン、美術館なども続々登場して、今では福岡県有数の観光スポットとして人気を集めている。

建築家・黒川紀章[くろかわきしょう]が設計した、31階建て高層マンションの最上階にある展望室。関門海峡、門司港レトロ地区の街並みを一望できる。デジタル望遠鏡がある。

バナナの叩き売りは大正時代に、九州の大都会であり貿易港として栄えていた門司で発祥したと言われている。現在は、観光地である門司港レトロ地区を代表する伝統芸能として親しまれていて、週末や、イベント・地域の祭りなどでバナナの叩き売りの懐かしく威勢のよい口上を聞く事ができる。

大正13年(1924)に「門司郵便局電話課庁舎」として建てられる。特徴は、放物線アーチと垂直線の美しい大正モダンの建物。また、門司で最初の鉄筋コンクリートの建物で、人間の鼻のように見える正面玄関にも特徴がある。館内は、明治からの電信・電話のあゆみが一目でわかる貴重な機器や史料が展示・保存されている博物館で、交換手さんが電話をつないでいた時代の「手動式交換機」やなつかしいベルの音がする旧型の「ダイヤル式」自動交換機での体験コーナーもある。

門司港レトロ地区にある、明治45年(1912)に建築されたレンガ造りの重厚な建物。平成29年(2017)に関門“ノスタルジック”海峡として日本遺産に認定された42件の構成文化財のうちの一つ。休憩スペース、カフェがあり、ひと休みするのによい。第一船溜まりを見下ろす上階からの眺めは格別。
