It was known since ancient times as the Hundred Holes, with myriad holes on the slopes of the hills. It was found to be the Yokoana Kofun group at the end of the Kofun period in excavations from 1887 (Meiji 20), and was designated as a national historical site in 1923 (Taisho 12). It is said to have been built in the year of Hirohito (810-824), which is a celebration of 88 Kanyin stone Buddhas. It was later burned during the Battle of Matsuyama Castle in 1590.
