米沢藩上杉家の家祖である上杉謙信を祀る上杉神社、名君上杉鷹山を祀る松岬神社の春の例大祭として始まり、期間中市内はまつり一色に彩られ、多くのイベントに沸きかえる。4月29日に例大祭と開幕祭(ステージイベント・民踊流し)で華々しく開幕。5月2日には上杉謙信出陣の儀式・武てい式(てい=示+帝)が、3日は上杉行列、フィナーレを飾る川中島合戦が勇壮に行われる。松川河川敷緑地公園には駐車場がないため、近くの臨時駐車場や米沢市役所の駐車場を利用のこと。

安久津八幡神社本殿にて、3曲からなる倭[やまと]舞を巫女が気品高く古式ゆかしく舞う。その後、紅一色の衣装に変えた巫女は石畳の参道途中にある舞楽殿にて、農作業の前祝いと豊作祈願として田植舞を舞い、舞の後には餅がまかれ、縁起物の餅を手に入れようと多くの見物客が手を差し伸べる。

飛騨一宮水無神社の5月1日の試楽祭、2日の本楽祭(例祭)は通称「宮まつり」として親しまれている。岐阜県指定無形文化財の神事芸能、「闘鶏楽」「神代踊」「獅子舞」の奉納をはじめ、神幸行列やどぶろくの振る舞いなど地元を挙げて盛大に執り行われる。
