Oyama Observation Park

The only port on the island where "Aogashima Maru" connects Aogashima to Hachijo Island enters the port. Because there is no suitable inlet to create a harbor, the quay, which was made by using roots, is located under a 200m high cliff-edge covered with concrete, and the rough waves of the Pacific Ocean come through the year. It is not uncommon for ships to be canceled for days. On the day the ship arrives after a long time, the port is full of people on the island and cargo like the mountains. It is also known as the port where barge work was carried out to the end in the country. It is a harbor with a rough view of the terrain and the severity of nature on Take Island.

When the Great Eruptions of Tenmei, which occurred in 1785, forced all the surviving islanders to live in refuge in Hachijo, brought together those who were forced to live a difficult life, the remains of the residence of Jirotau Sasaki, who played the return of the former islanders 50 years later. The building remained until a few years ago, but it collapsed in a typhoon, and now only the jade stone wall remains, but it is remembered by the large cycad trees and the well-heeled stone walls.

Hot geothermal steam can be seen spewing out from here and there on the northern slope of Maruyama, which is the inner-mountain. The hole where the steam spouts is called "Hin-gyu" in the island word. In the days when there was no electricity, islanders used Higuyu for heating, cooking, etc. Today, there is still a concrete steamer-like geothermal kettle (free of charge) near the Ikenosawa gas pit, where it is possible to make hot spring eggs, steamed potatoes, etc. Set before walking or bathing in the sauna, and when you come back, eat freshly steamed hot hot. However, the steam is quite hot, so be careful with burns.
