[About the Tenji Hita Hina Festival ~ Follow its roots ~]
At the roots, the government office of Nishikokusuji-gun of the Edo shogunate was set up, and the background was so prosperous that it was said to be "Tenji Hita" as Kyushu's best. It was a time when the Australian merchants, mainly the kakiya (bank), were very active and the townspeople culture was particularly blossoming.
In the old house of Hita, there are many gorgeous dolls that Australian merchants who have made enormous goods prefer to buy in Kyoto and Osaka, and there are still some items by the hands of one of Kyoto's best puppeteers.
It was about 40 years ago that the publication of the dingyo was started. It was triggered by the release of a doll that had been kept carefully since the Edo period for the purpose of town development. Then, seeing that customers came to visit the sight of beautiful tare dolls lined up every spring so that they could be sucked in, the "Tenji Hita Ohina Matsuri" began, citing the city. Now this has spread to Oita Prefecture, Kyushu and all over the country.
And the 40th time in 2023, "Tenji Ochina Matsuri" has become the pride of Hita citizens as a festival to take care of the memory of the history of the town. Not only many dolls, but also the old house of the time and its town still remain, such as Mameda-cho, Kuma, and Amase-cho, where things and places are valued. Please see and feel "the heart of Hita like Japan"!
