Nagasaki City General Tourist Information Center

The present cathedral was rebuilt in 1951 as a reinforced concrete chalk church with the foundation stone and brick exterior with donations from all over the world. Two towers are added to both sides of the central spire, and the ceiling is a cylindrical vault. The cross at the center of the altar is a replica of the "cross of the smile" related to Francisco Xavier at Xavier Castle in the Basque Country of Spain. Stained glass depicting the life of Christ is also beautiful and impressive. On the site is the "Monument to Saint Thomas West and 15 Martyrs (Sixteen Saints of Nagasaki)", from which the church name is derived.
