The world pays attention to the conservation activities of Nakaikemi Wetland (Nakaikemishichi), the site of the Ramsar Convention
Nakaikemi Wetland in the city of Tsuruga (Nakaikemishichi/top photo) is an internationally significant wetland registered in the Ramsar Convention in 2012.
Some 40m of the world's best mud-coal beds have been formed and deposited underground in the central wetlands, and climate change and other measures have been recorded in the past about 100,000 years. It is also home to about 4,000 species of organisms and is known as a treasure trove of biodiversity. Citizens and experts work together to conserve the wetlands, and their attitude to live in harmony with nature is also highly praised by overseas countries. As an effort to respond to the SDGs' "Let's Defend the Richness of the Land (Goal 15)", the possibilities of ecotourism are also expanding.
SDGs and Zero Carbon: Future-oriented Town Development
Tsuruga is the first city in the country to have a commercial light-water reactor in operation, and the promotion of CO2-free energy since the declaration of "Zero Carbon City" in 2021 has been evaluated, and efforts will be made to intensively decarbonize ahead of the whole country. has been selected to. In conjunction with the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen Tsuruga, the central city area has been supplied with renewable energy generated by photovoltaics and electricity generated during garbage incineration to achieve decarbonization.

The de-carbonation effort has also spread to city businesses, with the introduction of renewable energy and the reduction of CO2 emissions by installing solar panels on building rooftops (pictured top) or introducing batteries.
In addition, it is also working to decarbonize logistics. At the port of Tsurga, it is in the process of developing a promotion plan for the formation of a carbon neutral port.
* Decarbonization Preceding Area: It refers to a region that aims to achieve carbon neutrality (real zero greenhouse gas emissions) in 2050 and is focused on decarbonization ahead of the whole country.
Environmental education of citizen engagement and realization of a circular society
In the city of Tsuruga, people from the region take the lead in conducting environmental education and recycling activities. Schools and civic organizations work together, and there are plenty of opportunities to learn about sustainable living through environmental fairs and workshops. It is easy for foreign residents to participate, and it is possible to raise environmental awareness while deepening the connection with the region. This is a community-wide effort to contribute to the SDGs' "responsibility to create and take responsibility (target 12)."
