Strolling | Scenic Natural Spots | Tojinbo・Oshima・Mikuni Port Area

A scenic area formed by a cluster of small islands
Echizen Matsushima, located in the Hokuriku region, rivals the famous Matsushima in beauty. This scenic spot was named “Echizen Matsushima” because its picturesque landscape, formed by a cluster of small islands, resembles Matsushima in Rikuzen (present-day Miyagi Prefecture).
Along the coastline stretching northeast from Tojinbo, majestic rocky formations appear between quiet fishing villages. These landscapes, shaped by the same columnar joints found at Tojinbo, include unique formations like “Ogi-iwa” (Fan Rock) and “Zaimoku-iwa” (Timber Rock). Scattered across the area are beautiful small islands, and visitors can enjoy a variety of coastal scenery, from trails that lead up rocky outcrops via stone bridges to routes that explore marine erosion caves and unusual rock formations.Right next door is Echizen Matsushima Aquarium—a unique facility built partly on the actual landscape of Matsushima. From here, visitors can also enjoy a seaside walk: in summer, a calm horizon stretches out before you; in winter, you can experience the dramatic crash of powerful waves.
