The southernmost part of the five islands of 140 islands, large and small, and the largest island of the archipelago, with a circumference of about 322km, is Fukue Island. The central island of the city of Gotō, which is made up of 11 manned and 52 uninhabited islands, Uku, who has strengthened his power in Gotō since the Middle Ages, changed his name to Gotō in the time of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and set up a camp at Ishida in Fukue in the early Edo period. He continued as the Gōjima feudal lord until the Meiji Restoration. Today, the center of Fukushima Island is the Fukue area, where the Fukue Port and the site of Fukue Castle are located.
