It is the fourth island located on the scenic Akinada and Bishima Kaido, with terraced fields of masonry spread on the slopes of the mountain. It is the birthplace of Wenzhou mandarin orange, which is famous for its Dōchō mandarin orange stock, and is also the birthplace of domestic lemon. The Mitarai district at the eastern end of the island has flourished as a port of call for Kitamae ships during the Edo period, and many remains of the patronage. The cityscape, which is lined with buildings from the Edo period to the pre-war period, such as the Machiya group in the form of a maki sleeping bed, the Yōkan in the Taishō period, and a theater in the early Showa period, has been selected as a national important traditional buildings preservation district. It also has a deep history, including the site of a teahouse in memory of the prosperity of the flower district and the Shoya-yashiki where the Shishi of the Bakumatsu period leave their footprints.
