Shiretoko Nature Cruise

Spring is a chance to meet herds of orcas and hordes of broad-headed shearwaters coming from Tasmania. A male sperm whale with a physical condition of over 15m, which is rare in Japan in summer, comes to Karasu. The appearance of diving with a large tail fin raised high is impressive. One of the pleasures of the cruise is to have a full view of Shiretoko Renzan and Kukou Island. Try to find creatures together with the staff in the sea of Karasu, which shows various appearances depending on the season.

Lutharfield House, Shiretoko World Heritage Site

Rules, manners, and local updates are provided to climbers and sea kayakers aiming for the tip area of the Shiretoko Peninsula, such as Cape Shiretoko and Mount Shiretoko. I also introduce equipment and clothes necessary for outdoor experience, so I want to refer to it. If you are lucky, you can observe dolphins, whales, and killer whales with a telescope. It is a rare facility in the world where cetaceans can be observed from the land.

Roadside Station Shiretoko/Rou

At the entrance to the Raju side of the Shiretoko Trans-Shiretoko Road, the road station in the town of Raju-cho, which has one of the largest catches in the nation aiming for "Fish Castle Town Rasu". Along National Route 335, the roadside station with the sea in front of it is centered on the Shiretoko Rausu Exchange Center, which has the Shiretoko Rausu Tourist Information Center and an observation space, three facilities stand side by side: "Rausu no Kaimi Shiretoko Shokudo" and "Rausu Deep Layover", which has a goods sales office, and "Kaisin Kobo", which is directly managed by the Rausu Fishing Co-operative Association. Get a variety of updates at the tourist information center to enjoy seafood dishes such as Rausu's hockey and Rausu's kelp-noodles. On the way back, you can enjoy seafood and specialty products such as Rausu kelp.

Raju Province Observatory

A vista spot on an elevation of 167m above sea level overlooking the city of Rausu. From the observation tower, you can see the harbor and the mountains of Shiretoko, including Mount Rausu, as well as the Kunasho Island in the Northern Territories. On the first floor of the observation tower, various materials about the Northern Territories are exhibited. In the video room, it is also possible to view images of the Northern Territory problem.

Whale view hill park

At an altitude of about 80m, adjacent to the Rausu Lighthouse, the observation deck is a spot where wild orcas, poise dolphins and sperm whales can be observed from land. It is recommended to carry binoculars and telescopes, although there are cases where they can be observed with the naked eye.

Mount Rausu

At an altitude of 1661m, the highest peak of Shiretoko Renfeng. Many snow valleys remain in the summer, and the late July of the flower field, where a variety of alpine plants bloom from an early melting place, is around. The trailheads are located on the Shari side and on the Raju side, and the great panorama you can see from the summit as far away as Kunsakoshima. The ascent lasts about five hours from the Shari side mountaineering entrance (Iwaobetsu Onsen) and about six hours and 30 minutes from the Raju side mountaineering entrance (Raju Onsen). Notification is required for climbing.

Shiretoko Pass

The Trans-Shiretoko Road, which connects Utoro and Karasu on the Shiretoko Peninsula, is a winding pass road with a total length of 27km. The Shiretoko Pass is at the top of the road, where you can enjoy the great panorama directly in front of Mount Razusu, the deep green tree sea below your eyes, and the Nemuro Strait and the island of Kunasho floating there. The Shiretoko Crossing Road is the shortest-opened national road in Japan and is impassable from early November to late April.

Waterfall in Osinkosin

A waterfall along Route 334 on the way to Utoro from Shari town. It is a waterfall with a height of about 30m and a width of about 30m, which is said to be "Oshunku Ushi (a land with a large population of pines in the lower reaches of the river)" in the Ainu language. It is also called Futami Falls because it flows down bifurcated from the middle. Stairs are maintained from the waterfall to the observation point, and from the observation deck set above the waterfall, the view of the falling waterfall and the Sea of Okhotsk is wonderful. It is one of the eight views of Shiretoko, and has also been selected as one of the 100 waterfalls in Japan.

Utoro Hot Springs Yuyangtai Hot Water

A publicly owned hot spring bathing facility that stands on high ground overlooking the port of Utoro. It is a lodge-style building surrounded by standing trees and is open only from June to October. Open-air baths provided facing the sea for both men and women are well received. In particular, the view of the Sea of Okhotsk while bathing is emotional. Nearby is the Kokuso Chido camp, where campers often stop by.
