Hokkaido nature trail, Higashi heavy snow road

A walking path of about 8.5km from Kamishihoro-cho Railway Museum through the shores of Lake Nukahira to Metsep in the direction of Sankata. It is a walking path using the former Japanese National Railways Shihoro Line, also known as a mountain railway, and is a nature-rich walking path that can be reached across concrete arch bridges such as the Nukahira River Bridge and the Sanno Sawa Bridge. There is also a point on the way where you can tour the bridge of the Taushbetsu River, which is also known as a phantom bridge.

Tauschbetz Observation Deck

An observation deck looking at the bridge of the Taushbetsu River on the former Japanese National Railways Shihoro Line, which was abandoned in 1987. The Tauchubetsu River bridge was sunk to the bottom of Nukapira Lake in 1955 by the construction of a dam. It is a concrete bridge with continuous arches, but due to the fact that it has been weathered, it makes you feel the beauty of ancient ruins. Most of the bridge is submerged in summer. From the parking lot to the observation deck, a walking path of about 200m. The area is also the habitat of brown bears, so be careful.

Lake Nukahira

Although surrounded by primeval forest, it was originally an artificial lake created by damming the Otodake River during the construction of the dam in 1955. It is inhabited by rainbow trout and yambeet, and a fishing spot including smelt fishing in winter. In addition to enjoying seasonal observation of nature, there is also a hot spring town on the lake.

Nai Thai Plateau Ranch

A vast ranch of 17 million square meters spread over the foothills northwest of Kamishihoro, with an observation deck and a Naitai terrace with sweeping views over the Tokatsu Plain.

Mikuni Pass cafe

National Route 273, which connects Torayunkyo to Nukabira Wangxiang, is one of Japan's leading driving routes, running through the spectacular virgin forest at the foot of the Daisetsu Mountain. As you cross the Matsumi Bridge, the straight track Super Straight, which seeps through the virgin forest, awaits.

Mikuni Pass

It is a pass on National Route 273, with an altitude of 1139m. It is the highest pass in Hokkaido for a national highway that can be passed by an automobile, and the Osap Sea at the foot of Mount Daisetsu is stunning. There is an observation spot on the side of Kamishihoro town through the tunnel.

Mikuni Pass Observation Deck

It has the first name of "Mikuni" because it is located on the boundary between Ishikari, Tokatsu, and Kitami in the old place name. The altitude of the pass is 1139m, which is the highest on the national highway of Hokkaido. Mikuni Pass cafe (late April-early November) is open on the Tokatsu side of the pass. You can enjoy homemade roasted hand drip coffee.

Dongyun Lake

A lake that stands quietly on the east side of the lake. Along with Lake Okotampe and Onneto, it is one of the three major lakes in Hokkaido. The area is home to rare pikas, so if you are lucky, you can see them. Alpine plants greet the view from spring to summer.

Road Station Pier 21 Shihoro

A road station built at the nodule point of Routes 241 and 274 with an impressive roof reminiscent of a cattle station. The inside of the building is full of larch wood from Hokkaido, and it has an open-air feel. Each corner is full of products and menus symbolizing the beef and potato town of Shihoro. At the restaurant "Nijiiro Shokudo", a lineup of extravagant menus that buy a head of shihoro beef and use up each part. In specialty shops, potato chips for producer reduction from JA Shihoro-cho and the original "potato daifuku" of the station are very popular both for private use and for souvenirs.
